How to Hang a Mirror Safely: Walls, Fixings and What to Check First

The short answer

Choose the fixing by what the wall is made of, not by how heavy the mirror looks: solid masonry takes ordinary plugs and screws, hollow block needs long expansion anchors, and plasterboard needs either the studs behind it or proper cavity anchors rated well above the actual weight. Anything wider than about 60 cm should hang on two fixing points, levelled, never one.

And one step almost every guide skips: unpack and inspect the mirror before you put it on the wall. Our warranty terms only cover defects reported before installation, and the warranty seals sit on the hangers — so the inspection has to happen first, not after.

Step 1 — find out what your wall is made of

Tap the wall with a knuckle. A dull, solid sound means masonry. A hollow, drum-like sound means plasterboard, or masonry with a cavity behind the plaster. Drill a small pilot hole in an inconspicuous spot and look at the dust: grey powder is concrete, red-brown is brick, white and light is plasterboard or plaster.

Plasterboard is where most mirrors fail. Plastic plugs meant for masonry have almost nothing to grip in a 12.5 mm board, and a mirror that has hung happily for a month can still pull out. If the wall is hollow and you cannot find a stud, use anchors specifically rated for cavity walls and check the rating on the packet.

Step 2 — know the real weight before you buy the fixings

Frame material changes the weight far more than size does. A slim aluminium frame — 28 mm deep and 10 mm across the front, like our arched models — stays comparatively light even at 200 cm. A hand-carved wooden frame with a 9 cm wide, 2 cm deep profile is a different object entirely, and the glass adds to it.

The simplest way to get an honest number is to weigh the mirror while it is still packed, on a bathroom scale, and subtract a little for the packaging. Then choose anchors rated well above that figure. Anchor ratings assume a perfect installation in perfect material; real walls are older and softer than the test rig. Treating the rating as a ceiling rather than a target is the cheapest safety margin available.

Step 3 — two fixing points, not one

A single central hook puts the entire load on one point and lets a wide mirror rotate out of level every time someone closes a door. Two points spread the load and hold the alignment.

Measure the distance between the two hangers on the back of the mirror, transfer it to the wall with a spirit level or a laser line, and drill both holes at the same height. A few millimetres of difference is visible on a 180 cm frame — check with the level before you hang, not after.

Step 4 — before you drill

  • Cut a paper template the exact size of the mirror and tape it to the wall for a day. It costs nothing and settles the position argument before any hole exists.
  • Scan for cables and pipes with a detector. As a rule, electrical cables run vertically and horizontally from sockets and switches — treat the strips directly above, below and beside them as no-drill zones.
  • Check the drill setting. Hammer action for masonry, no hammer for tile or plasterboard.
  • Look at what the mirror will face. A mirror doubles whatever is in front of it: a window or a chandelier repays the reflection, an open wardrobe does not.

Inspect the mirror before you hang it

This is the step that costs people money, and it is written into our terms rather than being general advice.

  • Every mirror leaves the workshop with warranty seals attached to its hangers. Removing a seal ends the possibility of a claim for mechanical damage — so look the piece over while the seals are still intact.
  • Defects reported after installation are not covered. Inspect the glass and the frame in good light, at arm's length and then close up, before a single hole is drilled.
  • Damage from improper installation is not covered either. A mirror that comes off a wall because the anchor was wrong for the wall is not a manufacturing fault.
  • If the piece arrives damaged in transit, unpack it in front of the courier and have a damage report signed by both of you. Without that signed report a transport claim cannot be accepted.

Hanging it, step by step

  1. Unpack in front of the courier, check for transport damage, leave the warranty seals in place.
  2. Identify the wall type and choose the anchor for it.
  3. Weigh the mirror, or ask us, and pick anchors rated well above that weight.
  4. Tape up a paper template and live with it for a day.
  5. Scan for cables and pipes, then mark both drill points with a spirit level.
  6. Drill, fit the anchors, drive the screws, leaving the heads far enough out for the hangers.
  7. Lift the mirror with a second person — two people, always, on anything above 120 cm.
  8. Check the level again and adjust before you let go of the weight.

Leaning instead of hanging

Large mirrors leaned against a wall look effortless, and the look is genuinely popular for full-length pieces. It is only safe if the mirror is still anchored to the wall with a strap or bracket at the top. A tall leaning mirror is a tipping hazard in any home with children or animals, and glass that falls forward does not fall gently. Lean it for the look; fix it for the safety.

Set the base 10–15 cm out from the skirting so the mirror tilts back slightly rather than standing vertical, and check that the floor covering will not let the base slide.
