The short answer: pick the shape that answers what the wall needs. A round mirror softens a room built on straight lines, an arch adds height and the feel of an opening, a frameless organic shape works like a piece of sculpture, and a tall rectangle is the classic choice for full-length use and ornate frames. When two shapes both seem right, let the dominant lines of the room and the free wall decide.
Start with the lines in the room
Look at what the mirror will hang next to: window frames, door openings, shelves, the back of a sofa. Most rooms are drawn in right angles. A curved mirror interrupts that grid and becomes the soft point the eye rests on; a rectangular mirror repeats the grid, which is calm and expected. A useful rule: one dominant shape per wall — and if you break the pattern, do it on purpose, with one mirror that is clearly larger than everything around it.
Round mirrors: soft, flexible, easy to place
A circle has no top and no bottom, so it works where the wall is awkward — above a console or sideboard, in a hallway, on a free stretch between two windows. As a rule of thumb, above a piece of furniture choose a diameter of roughly two thirds of its width; on a free wall, a large circle of 120 cm or more becomes the focal point of the room. Our round mirrors have a slim brushed aluminium frame and come in eight diameters, from 60 to 200 cm. More on where they work in is a round mirror a good choice for a living room.

Arch mirrors: height and the feel of an opening
An arch is a rectangle with a soft top: it keeps the vertical line of a full-length mirror and removes its hard corners. It needs wall height — our arches start at 160 cm and reach 200 cm — so check the ceiling and the clearance at the highest point of the curve. Arches suit hallways, bedrooms and dining rooms with a plain wall behind them. Browse the whole family of gold arch mirrors.

Frameless organic shapes: the mirror as an object
An organic mirror has an asymmetric, flowing outline and a polished edge instead of a frame, so the shape itself is the decoration. It looks best on a calm wall in a minimalist or contemporary room, and it needs more empty space around it than a regular shape, because there is no frame to hold the edge. Standard formats run from 120 × 60 to 210 × 100 cm. See organic mirrors and the frameless collection.

Rectangular mirrors: the classic for full-length use
A tall rectangle is the practical shape for dressing and for narrow walls, and it carries an ornate frame better than any other shape — the carving does the talking. Our hand-carved wooden frames come in 15 formats from 50 × 100 to 100 × 180 cm. See full-length mirrors and the wooden frame collection.
| Shape | Best for | Standard sizes | Frame |
|---|---|---|---|
| Round | Consoles, hallways, softening right angles | 8 diameters, Ø 60 → 200 cm | Slim aluminium |
| Arch | Height, hallways, bedrooms | 9–10 formats, 160 × 80 → 200 × 140 cm | Slim aluminium |
| Organic | Calm walls, minimalist rooms | 5 formats, 120 × 60 → 210 × 100 cm | Frameless, polished edge |
| Rectangular | Dressing, narrow walls, ornate interiors | 15 formats, 50 × 100 → 100 × 180 cm | Hand-carved wood |
Which shape for which room
- Narrow hallway: a tall rectangle or an arch — they add height instead of width.
- Above a sideboard or console: a round mirror, or a wide organic shape, a little narrower than the furniture beneath it — see what size mirror above a sideboard for the exact proportions.
- Bedroom: an arch or a tall rectangle; where to place it is covered in where to put a mirror in a bedroom.
- Living room full of right angles: round or organic, to break the grid.
- Traditional or ornate interior: a rectangle with a carved frame.
Two checks before you order
Measure the free wall and tape the outline at full size — the steps are in how to measure a wall for a mirror. Then think about height: the centre of a mirror usually sits around 145–155 cm from the floor (see at what height to hang a mirror). A large mirror is heavy, so check the wall and the fixings first: how to hang a mirror safely. If none of the standard sizes fits, read about made-to-measure mirrors.

Frequently asked questions
Which mirror shape makes a room look bigger?
Size and position matter more than shape. Tall shapes — an arch or a tall rectangle — stretch a wall upwards, while a large round or organic mirror opens up a wide, empty wall. Whatever the shape, a mirror that reflects a window or a light source does the most for the feeling of space.
Is a round or a rectangular mirror better for a hallway?
In a narrow hallway a tall rectangle or an arch usually works better, because it adds height and lets you see yourself in full. A round mirror is the better choice above a console or on a short wall where you only need a face-height view.
Can I combine different mirror shapes in one room?
Yes. Keep one dominant shape per wall and let the others stay clearly smaller or clearly different. Two similar-sized mirrors of different shapes on one wall tend to compete.
Which frame goes with which shape?
Our round and arch mirrors have a slim aluminium frame, the organic mirrors are frameless with a polished edge, and the rectangular mirrors have hand-carved wooden frames.
Can I order a shape in a size that is not in your list?
Send the model name and the exact width × height in centimetres to sales@reflessa.com and we confirm what can be produced and at what price. Details are on the made-to-measure mirrors page.
